When Passion Meets Expertise: A Love Story

Drake Editorial Team

2020 is almost coming to an end and I can’t help but reflect on the years that passed.

I began my career as a recruiter in 2013. Back then, my work revolved around deploying skilled workers across the globe. It was very fulfilling - to see them having a better life a couple of years after they signed their contract. I grew fond of hearing from them how they managed to put their kids to good schools or how they were able to purchase a house or car for their families.

Their success stories bore witness to the blossoming love that I had for recruitment. I believe that was the start of the passion I developed for the field. This made me realize that this is what I was called to do; I wanted to help people find the best opportunities to fend for their families. I let this passion burn in me and push for the desire to do more for my candidates.

Over time, this passion flamed brighter and I had to find a team that could fuel it more. Just like a knight in its silver armor, Drake Personnel Phils. Inc. found me and what became a fruitful relationship today began in 2016.

The Value of Expertise

Four years forward, I came to learn another value that is just as important as passion. Drake International taught me the value of expertise. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you won’t be able to accomplish anything. Passion, alone, can only do so much. You can be the most passionate person in the world, but it will lose its credibility if you cannot convey the kind of quality service you want to deliver to your clients and candidates.

My team put a heavy emphasis on having this strong market expertise. I’ve learned the importance of knowing and studying your market. I’ve come to appreciate the importance of industry knowledge in leveraging yourself as a trusted consultant to both your clients and candidates. Of course, this took time as the management allowed me the exposure of going to exclusive networking events, attending various seminars, and encouraging me to read materials to be abreast of any updates concerning the industry. What helped me the most was being able to rub elbows with C-level executives who shared their wisdom and experience in their chosen trade. All these, and more, is what I owe to the team who instilled in me the essence of being an expert consultant.

Now that I bore witness to the marriage of these two heavy values, I guess the moral of the story here is to always have both if you are to pursue a career in recruitment. One does not work without the other.

This is what makes me a proud Recruitment Officer for Drake Philippines.

Growing the leader within us

Jim Clemmer

Leadership is a verb, not a noun. Leadership is action, not a position. Leadership is defined by what we do, not the role we are in. Some people in "leadership roles" are excellent leaders.

Is it a ‘who’ or ‘what’ problem?

Drake Editorial Team

In 'who' organizations the important issues all revolve around 'who" said it, did, didn't do it or why they did it or didn't do it. In these organizations there is enough finger pointing to last a lifetime.
